Understanding Length to Width Ratios in Diamond Cuts

There are two diamond cuts where the length to width ratio is a common topic: cushion and radiant cut diamonds. Unlike square princess or rectangular emerald cuts, cushion and radiant diamonds can be either square or rectangular, allowing more variation. Generally, cushion and radiant cuts are more likely to be square due to the rough shape selected for fancy shapes. The diamond market also appreciates elongated cushion and radiant cuts, and preferences vary. It’s important to disclose the length to width ratio to clients when considering these cuts. Elongated shapes appear larger to the eye than square cut stones of the same carat weight. Emerald, pear, and oval cut diamonds suggest a larger appearance than princess, cushion, or radiant cuts of the same weight.
